I had a vreally fun shoot three nights ago. In fact, I had been looking forward to this shoot for some time. A couple had an unusual request for their engagement portrait. They had found me through their wedding planners Schwartz and Woodward. What they had in mind was a 40’s style image of the husband reading the paper and smoking his pipe, with the wife at his side, spatula in one had, and dinner served in the other. Her world in perfect order and harmony. But the overall theme was to be light and fun.
We came out with a few really great and fun images. One, was a bit different than ordered, as I had our wife holding a knife in defiance. Just a bit of a twist.
Enjoy.

I had a very fun couple come into the studio today. They were a bit nervous when we started the session, but by the end, we had created some fabulous imagery.
"Nothing is so powerful as an insight into human nature, what compulsions drive a man, what instincts dominate his action, even though his language so often camouflages what really motivates him. For if you know these things about a man you can touch him at the core of his being." – Bill Bernbach

The July heat in Houston is oppressive. So when Tamara booked me early in the year for her wedding this July, I was kind of surprised when she told me we would be walking from her home to the church, and then from the church to the reception in downtown Houston! Yikes!
But one second later, I knew she had a clear vision of what she wanted. Her fiancé walked from their loft to work in downtown Houston every morning, and he loved the esthetics created by buildings and overpasses. They both had a clear vision and a plan, and they had chosen me to make that plan come together.
This is my kind of customer. They drink my brand of cool aide! More, more, more, I say. I was hot, the bride and groom were hot, and my assistant could probably have killed me, but we all had a great time, and the images turned out fantastic!

For a good time, visit nancy and Janice at Butler's Courtyard.
There is a difference between a commercial photographer and an art photographer. 99.9% of all wedding photographers are commercial photographers, specialized in weddings. The commercial photographer produces photographs that are in focus, well lit, and capture a lot of detail. The commercial photographer is a flatterer. The Art photographer produces the kinds of photographs that are far more than simple information; they have attitude and context through the daring use of angle, depth, perspective, and light. Wedding photographs are art when people want a copy of them, even if they don’t know the bride and groom. I strive to become a better artist with every wedding I shoot.
I am an expert in the use of shadows in my photography, intentionally leading the viewer’s gaze to a predetermined destination in the image. My consistent and instinctual use of shadows in my photography is the signature element, and the underlying foundation, defining the easily identifiable style known as Solaris.

I’ve been pretty busy in the studio as of late. I am not complaining at all… I love it when I am busy. Here are three more images taken this week in the studio. The monitor behind the subject is a 40" plasma tv in the studio that clients use to view their portrait sessions on to make their selections. However, in this instance we used a stock image of NY on the monitor, as the subject will be moving there in the near future and will be a part of the ever booming real estate market there.

Here are three completely different images, from the same session, taken in the studio last week. This couple booked Solaris in January for a wedding on 11/25 of this year.

These portraits are from an outdoor engagement shoot of a couple that booked Solaris in January of this year for their wedding in September. These were taken last week in one my favorite locations.
If you know my style of photography, then you can see what I am trying to do in this image. I have attempted to place my subjects as part of their environment, and I have drawn your attention to them with the use of shadows.

Took a few pictures of the kids today.... about 300. Most of the images I have posted are of Katie, as Gavin wasn't in to good of a mood. All of these were taken with natural window light.
